Hippocampus histrix
This seahorses is the real histrix, not any of the 5 that were once all lumped
into the catagory of histrix. H, Histrix has a long LONG snout, and is often called
the Thorny Seahorse. This long snout is over half the head length. As with the
other horses that were lumped into being called histrix, this one also has sharp
spikes. However, the true histrix does not have any stripes on the snout. They
can be yellow, green, or pale pink. Some specimins have been photographed with
red designs. They are located in the Red Sea, and Indian Ocean. A few have been
found in Hawaiian waters.
