Hippocampus capensis

From the Red Sea, or the Indian Ocean. I have heard this seahorse's name many times before, but I haven't seen one. They tend to be mottled looking, and have spots that are scattered about a green or dark brownish body. This horse's drawings remind me of a large sized H. zosterae..but I have not worked with them, so I can't say. However, this is the horse that was first put on the Threatened list in 1994. It is also reported to me that this is the horse that has been called a freshwater horse....but I can't support that. It is possible that it has taken a great flux in salinity, but to all recorded seahorse research, there is not a true freshwater seahorse.
